At the crossroads to the Anlauftal (in the direction of Carinthia) and to Sportgastein there is the historic mining settlement Altböckstein - unique industrial monument.
The settlement was established in 1741 when the peak of the Gastein gold fever was over for a long time. The reason was the simultaneaous task of the older mining plants and residential buildings of the "old Pöck", which orginally were located 15 minutes down into the valley in the direction of Naßfeld, but which were destroyed by an avalanche and in 1746 by strong rains. The new place was called Böckstein and came into being through the purchase of grazing land in the so-called "Hinter- oder Minder-Böckstein".
The oldest house was the presbytery (1741/42) the present parish yard. In 1766 the pilgrimage church "Maria vom guten Rat" was built.
Since 1980 the whole plant has been restored and a museum (since 1979) informs about the history of the place and the mining.
The mining settlement Altböckstein represents an unique ensemble of different buildings consisting of various operating plants of the mineral processing plant, which are strung together corresponding to the course of manufacture, as well as administration, residential and stable buildings.
The construction of the whole block of buildings has only slightly been changed and therfore it is of great imprtance as far as the preservation of historical monuments, economic and social historical reasons are concerned.
The unity of the ensemble as well as the restored and efficient mineral processing plant make Altböckstein a unique mining historical, industrial archaeological monument.
In the salt barn museum the gold and silver mining is shown. In the "Säumerstall Museum" there is a working imitation of ore processing plant with pounding ore, a gold mill and a percussion frame.
